How Check the Pro works
Check the Pro is run by Cakewalk, a small company in Tacoma, Washington, that builds websites and phone answering for local trades.
What we are, and aren't
We're a referral service. We are not a contractor: we don't do, quote, supervise or take payment for any work. When you ask for help, we pass your request to one pro, who contracts with you directly.
Who we pass requests to
- Only businesses with an active registration on Washington L&I's contractor register, in the right trade, near you.
- If one of Cakewalk's customers covers your town and trade, they're asked first. They pay Cakewalk for their website, and we say so wherever they're listed.
- Otherwise we ask another registered local business that may not have any relationship with us.
- Never more than one at a time. If they can't take it, we find another.
We don't background-check, certify or vouch for anyone's work. Registration means a business has the bond and liability insurance Washington requires; it isn't a guarantee of quality. Check any pro yourself, get a written estimate, and ask about permits.
Where the data comes from
Town pages and the contractor check use the Washington Department of Labor & Industries' public contractor register, published as open data and refreshed here daily. The septic page uses WAC 246-272A-0270 and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department's guidance. The photo check is general guidance written by AI from your photo and description, not an inspection.
